snuffboxes
Small tobacco vessels
Snuffboxes are small containers for holding snuff—powdered tobacco inhaled through the nose.
Popular from the 17th through 19th centuries, they ranged from simple wooden boxes to ornate creations in gold, silver, or enamel, often given as diplomatic gifts or tokens of favor.
The term survives mainly in historical and antique contexts.
