siftings
What sieves catch
Siftings are what remains after something has been passed through a sieve or sorting process—either the fine particles that fall through or the coarser material left behind, depending on context.
The term extends to anything that results from careful examination or selection: the siftings of archival research or siftings from the day's news.
In mining and milling, siftings often refers specifically to residual material separated from the desired product.
