sicario
Paid killer, Spanish
A sicario is a hitman or contract killer, particularly one working for Latin American drug cartels or organized crime.
The term comes from Spanish and carries connotations of professional, often brutal assassination work: The cartel sent sicarios to eliminate the witness.
The word gained wider English currency through news coverage of Mexican drug violence and the 2015 film *Sicario*.
