shriving

Hearing a confession

Shriving is the act of hearing confession and granting absolution—what a priest does in the sacrament of penance.

The word is archaic, surviving mainly in Shrovetide and Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent when Christians traditionally confessed their sins.

To shrive someone is to absolve them; to be shriven is to have received absolution.
