shrove

Heard and absolved

Shrove is the past tense of shrive, an archaic verb meaning to hear confession and grant absolution.

The word survives almost exclusively in Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday when Christians traditionally confessed sins before Lent.

The connection to confession has faded; now Shrove Tuesday is associated with pancakes and indulgence before fasting begins.
