short-wave

Distant broadcast band

Short-wave refers to radio waves with wavelengths roughly between 10 and 100 meters, used for long-distance broadcasting because they reflect off the atmosphere and can travel around the globe.

A short-wave radio is a receiver tuned to these frequencies: We picked up the BBC on short-wave.

The term evokes a bygone era of international broadcasting, though hobbyists and some news services still use it.
