sheiks

Desert tribal leaders

Sheiks is the plural of sheik, an Arab leader—the head of a tribe, family, or village.

The term also applies to Islamic religious leaders and scholars.

In early 20th-century slang, a sheik was a romantically attractive man, from the 1921 Rudolph Valentino film *The Sheik*: The girls all thought he was quite the sheik.

Also spelled sheikh.
