shallow end
Where novices wade
The shallow end is the portion of a swimming pool where the water is shallowest, typically three to four feet deep—safe for wading, children, and non-swimmers.
Figuratively, to stay in the shallow end is to avoid risk or complexity: He's been in the shallow end of the business, never taking on serious projects.
The opposite is the deep end.
