self-rescuers
Miner escape devices
Self-rescuers are emergency breathing devices designed to help people escape from environments with toxic gases or insufficient oxygen, particularly in mining disasters.
The device filters air or provides a short-term oxygen supply—typically enough for thirty to sixty minutes of escape time.
Miners carry self-rescuers on their belts: When the alarm sounded, workers activated their self-rescuers and headed for the exit.
