self-recording

Documents without help

Self-recording describes instruments or devices that automatically document their own measurements without human intervention.

A self-recording thermometer logs temperature readings over time; a self-recording rain gauge tracks precipitation.

The term also applies to the practice of recording oneself: self-recording video diaries, self-recording for language practice.
