security deposit

Landlord's damage insurance

A security deposit is money paid upfront to a landlord, rental company, or service provider as protection against damage or nonpayment.

If you return the apartment in good condition and pay all rent owed, you get the deposit back: We lost our security deposit because of the stains on the carpet.

The amount is typically one or two months' rent.
