Third-ranking sailor
Second mate is the third-ranking deck officer on a merchant ship, below the captain and first mate.
The second mate typically oversees navigation, maintains charts, and stands watch on the bridge.
On smaller vessels the position may not exist; on larger ones there may be a third mate below.
