sealing-wax

Envelope closure material

Sealing-wax is a resinous substance that softens when heated and hardens when cooled, traditionally used to seal letters and documents.

A blob of melted wax pressed with a signet ring or stamp created an authentication mark that revealed tampering.

Though largely ceremonial now, sealing-wax persists for formal correspondence and decorative purposes: She dripped red sealing-wax onto the envelope and pressed her family crest into it.
