sea trials
Ship's maiden voyage
Sea trials are the test voyages a newly built or repaired ship undertakes before entering regular service.
The crew puts all systems through their paces—engines, navigation, safety equipment—to identify problems while still near the shipyard.
The destroyer completed sea trials and was commissioned into the Navy.
The term extends to any vessel, from aircraft carriers to pleasure yachts.
