sea lice

Salmon farm pests

Sea lice are tiny crustaceans that parasitize fish, particularly salmon, feeding on their skin, mucus, and blood.

In fish farming, sea lice infestations cause significant economic damage and welfare concerns.

The term also refers to the stinging sensation swimmers experience from larval jellyfish or sea anemones trapped against the skin, technically called seabather's eruption: I broke out in a rash from sea lice after swimming near the reef.
