scroll paintings
Rolled decorative art
Scroll paintings are artworks created on long rolls of paper or silk, designed to be unrolled and viewed in sections rather than displayed all at once.
The format originated in East Asia, particularly China and Japan, where horizontal handscrolls are viewed right to left and vertical hanging scrolls are mounted for display.
The gradual unrolling creates a narrative experience: The scroll painting revealed a landscape that seemed to unfold as we moved through it.
