Edward the Confessor
Westminster Abbey founder
Edward the Confessor was an Anglo-Saxon king of England (reigned 1042–1066), the last of the House of Wessex.
His childless death triggered the succession crisis that led to the Norman Conquest.
Called "the Confessor" for his piety—he founded Westminster Abbey—he was canonized in 1161.
His reign marks the end of Anglo-Saxon England.
