grand scheme of things
Ultimate big picture
The grand scheme of things is the larger context or overall picture against which smaller matters seem insignificant.
The phrase almost always appears with "in": In the grand scheme of things, a bad grade on one test doesn't matter much.
It invokes perspective—what feels urgent now may be trivial when viewed against life, history, or the universe.
