safe word
Prearranged exit phrase
A safe word is a prearranged signal, typically used during BDSM or rough sex, that immediately stops the activity.
Because "no" or "stop" might be part of roleplay, partners agree on an unambiguous word—often something unsexy and memorable like pineapple or red—that clearly communicates genuine distress.
The term extends to any context where a code word signals a hard boundary: We need a safe word for when your mother visits too long.
