Monteverdi

Claudio Monteverdi was an Italian composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, active in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

He is considered a pivotal figure in the transition between musical eras, particularly for his development of opera as an art form.

His *L'Orfeo* (1607) is often regarded as the first great opera.

Monteverdi also made significant contributions to the madrigal form and sacred music.
