running play
Handoff to back
A running play in American football is an offensive play where the ball is advanced by a player carrying it on foot rather than throwing it.
The quarterback hands off or pitches to a running back, who attempts to gain yardage through or around the defensive line: They called a running play on third and short.
Running plays contrast with passing plays and form the basis of a team's ground game.
