Quarterback throws it
A pass play is a football play in which the quarterback throws the ball to a receiver downfield, as opposed to a running play where the ball is handed off.
The term applies to both designed passes and improvised throws: They called a pass play on third and long.
In casual use, any forward pass attempt.
