royal consort
King's or queen's spouse
A royal consort is the spouse of a reigning monarch who does not hold sovereign power themselves.
The title distinguishes them from the ruling king or queen: Prince Philip was royal consort to Queen Elizabeth II for nearly seven decades.
A consort shares the monarch's status and performs ceremonial duties but cannot rule independently.
