rowlocks
Boat oar holders
Rowlocks are the U-shaped fittings on a boat's gunwale that hold the oars in place while rowing, allowing them to pivot.
In American English, the same device is usually called an oarlock.
The British spelling reflects the pronunciation "rollocks," which sounds like—and is sometimes used as a minced form of—bollocks.
