phytophthora
Oomycete crop killer
Phytophthora is a genus of water molds that cause destructive plant diseases, including potato blight and sudden oak death.
These organisms thrive in wet conditions and attack roots, stems, and leaves: The phytophthora infection spread rapidly through the nursery stock.
Though often called fungi, they're more closely related to algae. (Capitalized Phytophthora is the formal genus name.)
