rock pool

Shore's natural aquarium

A rock pool is a small body of seawater trapped among rocks on a shoreline when the tide recedes.

These natural basins often harbor miniature ecosystems—anemones, crabs, small fish, and seaweed—making them popular with children and tidepoolers: We spent the afternoon exploring rock pools.

Also called a tidepool, especially in American English.
