Review copies are free books sent by publishers to critics, journalists, bloggers, or other media figures before or shortly after publication, hoping to generate reviews and publicity.
The practice extends to other media—albums, films, video games: The studio sent out review copies to gaming websites a week before launch.
Also called advance copies when distributed before the release date.
