redzone

Twenty yards out

Redzone refers to a critical or high-stakes area.

In American football, it's the area between the 20-yard line and the goal line, where offensive plays are most likely to result in a touchdown: They're in the redzone with two minutes left.

More broadly, redzone describes any situation requiring heightened urgency or caution—a project in the redzone is dangerously behind schedule.

NFL RedZone is also a television channel showing live scoring opportunities.
