redbug

Tiny biting pest

Redbug is a common name for the chigger—a tiny mite larva that burrows into skin and causes intense itching.

The term is used mainly in the southern United States: I got into some redbugs walking through that tall grass.

The name comes from the reddish color of both the mite and the welts it leaves behind.
