A recreation yard is an outdoor area in a prison or jail where inmates are allowed to exercise, socialize, or spend time outside their cells.
Often shortened to rec yard.
The space typically contains basic exercise equipment or a basketball court: Inmates get one hour in the recreation yard each day.
