the hole
Gap in something
The hole is golf slang for the cup or its surrounding area on the green, and by extension the entire stretch of play from tee to cup: She birdied the hole.
A course typically has eighteen holes.
The phrase also appears in in the hole—owing money or behind in score—from the image of being down in a pit.
