isolation unit

Separated medical space

An isolation unit is a separate area within a hospital, prison, or other institution where individuals are kept apart from the general population.

In medical settings, isolation units contain patients with highly contagious diseases or compromised immune systems: The patient was transferred to the isolation unit after testing positive for tuberculosis.

In prisons, isolation units house inmates separated for punishment, protection, or security concerns—often called solitary confinement.
