isolation cell
Lone confinement room
An isolation cell is a small, confined space within a prison or detention facility where inmates are held separately from the general population.
Also called solitary confinement or "the hole," isolation cells restrict nearly all human contact, often for twenty-three hours a day: He spent six months in an isolation cell.
The practice is controversial, with critics arguing it constitutes psychological torture.
