Driver's backward view
A rear-view mirror is the mirror mounted inside a vehicle's windshield, angled to show the driver what's behind them.
Side mirrors serve a similar function but are called side mirrors or wing mirrors, not rear-view mirrors.
Figuratively, looking in the rear-view mirror means reflecting on the past: That relationship is in the rear-view mirror now.
