rDNA

Engineered genetic material

rDNA stands for recombinant DNA—genetic material created by combining DNA sequences from different sources, often different species.

The technology allows scientists to insert genes from one organism into another: rDNA techniques produced the first synthetic human insulin.

The term also appears as "recombinant DNA" or "r-DNA." In a separate context, rDNA can refer to ribosomal DNA, the genes encoding ribosomal RNA.
