pump jack
Petroleum lifting device
A pump jack is a mechanical device used to extract oil from wells that lack sufficient natural pressure to flow on their own.
The distinctive horse-head shape bobs up and down, driving a piston deep underground to lift crude oil to the surface.
Pump jacks are iconic fixtures of oil fields, particularly in Texas and Oklahoma: Pump jacks dotted the landscape as far as the eye could see.
