up and down

Rising and falling

Up and down describes vertical movement in both directions, or repeated alternation between higher and lower positions: The elevator went up and down all day.

It extends to fluctuation generally—moods, prices, fortunes: His weight has been up and down for years.

As an adjective, it can mean variable or inconsistent: an up-and-down performance.

To know something up and down is to know it thoroughly.
