candling

Light-through-shell inspection

Candling is the practice of holding an egg up to a bright light to examine its contents without breaking the shell.

The technique reveals whether an egg is fertilized, how far an embryo has developed, or whether the egg has gone bad.

Originally done with candles, hence the name, but now typically uses electric lights.

The farmer candled the eggs to check for fertility.
