puddlers

Furnace-stirring laborers

Puddlers were workers who performed puddling, a process in ironmaking where molten pig iron was stirred in a furnace to remove carbon and produce wrought iron.

The job required tremendous skill and physical endurance, as puddlers worked in extreme heat while constantly stirring the molten metal with long iron rods.

The occupation was central to iron production from the late 18th century until steel-making processes largely replaced it in the early 20th century.
