open-hearth
Steel production method
Open-hearth describes a steelmaking process where pig iron is refined in a shallow, open furnace.
The method dominated steel production through most of the twentieth century before being largely replaced by more efficient processes.
The term also describes fireplaces built into a wall with an open front: They gathered around the open-hearth fireplace.
