psychologizing

Explaining away motives

Psychologizing is analyzing behavior or situations in psychological terms, often excessively or inappropriately.

The word usually carries a dismissive tone—suggesting someone is overcomplicating what's simple or projecting psychological explanations where they don't belong: Stop psychologizing everything I do.

It implies armchair analysis rather than genuine insight.
