prorogue
Discontinue legislative session
Prorogue means to discontinue a session of a legislative body without dissolving it—parliament remains intact but suspended until reconvened.
The term is mostly British and Commonwealth: The Prime Minister prorogued Parliament for five weeks.
Distinguished from adjournment (a brief recess) and dissolution (ending a parliament entirely, triggering elections).
