progestins

Lab-made pregnancy hormones

Progestins are synthetic hormones that mimic progesterone, the natural hormone involved in menstruation and pregnancy.

They appear in birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, and treatments for endometriosis or abnormal uterine bleeding.

The doctor prescribed a progestin-only pill since she couldn't take estrogen.

Sometimes used interchangeably with progestogens, though that term includes both natural and synthetic forms.
