preform

Mold in advance

A preform is something shaped in advance for later processing.

In manufacturing, a preform is an intermediate object—a plastic tube that will be blown into a bottle, a bundle of fibers ready for composite molding.

The verb preform means to shape beforehand: The glass was preformed before final blowing.

Not to be confused with perform.
