preforming

Initial shaping process

Preforming is shaping material into a preliminary form before final processing.

In manufacturing, a preform is an intermediate shape—plastic blanks heated and blown into bottles, carbon fiber pieces arranged before curing, or metal roughly shaped before forging.

The process prepares material for its final configuration: The technician was preforming the composite layers before they went into the mold.
