potheen

Illicit Irish whiskey

Potheen is Irish whiskey distilled illegally, traditionally in small pot stills hidden from tax authorities.

The word comes from the Irish for "little pot." Also spelled poteen or potcheen.

Like moonshine in American usage, potheen suggests homemade spirits of uncertain quality: He kept a jar of potheen hidden in the barn.
