pollards
Trees cut back
Pollards are trees that have been cut back to the trunk to encourage dense growth of new branches, or the practice of cutting trees this way.
The technique produces a distinctive shape—a thick trunk topped with a cluster of young shoots.
Pollards also refers to animals, especially deer or cattle, that have lost or been deprived of their horns.
As a verb, to pollard is to cut back a tree in this manner: The willows along the canal had been pollarded for generations.
