coppices

Small harvested forests

Coppices is the plural of coppice, a thicket or grove of small trees that are periodically cut back to stimulate growth from the stump.

The practice, called coppicing, produces wood for fuel, fencing, or crafts while keeping the root system alive.

As a verb, to coppice is to cut trees this way: The woodland has been coppiced for centuries.
