pollarded
Cut back severely
Pollarded describes a tree that has been cut back to the trunk to encourage dense new growth at the top.
The technique, called pollarding, produces a distinctive shape—a thick trunk topped with a burst of thin branches.
The pollarded willows lined the canal like sentinels.
Pollarding keeps trees compact and was traditionally used to harvest wood without killing the tree.
