political commissar
Military political officer
A political commissar is an official assigned to a military unit or institution to ensure loyalty to the ruling party and its ideology.
The role originated in revolutionary armies, most notably the Soviet Red Army, where commissars monitored commanders, supervised troop morale, and reported ideological deviation.
The commissar had authority to countermand the general's orders.
The term now evokes heavy-handed ideological enforcement or surveillance of political correctness.
